Irish folk music guitar player Arty McGlynnArty McGlynn is one of Irelands best and most influential guitar players.
He was born im Omagh, Co. Tyrone into a musical family. Both his parents were playing musical instruments and Arty took up the accordion as a child. When he got his first guitar, Arty was strongly inspired by the playing of jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery.
From the age of 15, McGlynn was working professionally as a musician. For nearly twenty years he played with various showbands, playing "what he was told to". By the mid seventies he grew tired of it and started looking for something more meaningful.
He met Belfast singer David Hammond, who made him finish the album he has started recording. Approaching traditional irish music with the guitar was a groundbreaking step at the time and the album "McGlynn's Fancy" inspired many other guitarists. Hammond supplied vocal to two songs on the album.
McGlynn's versatile musicianship soon made him a frequently sought after muscian and he has been working with such diverse artist as Paul Brady, Christy Moore, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Conner, Enya, Chieftains and many other.
He has contributed to more than seventy albums both as a musician and as a producer. He has been working as a solo artist as well as in other constellations, notably with his wife, Nollaig Casey. He lso joined bands like Planxty, Patrick Street, De Danann and the Van Morrison Band.
